Not only can it not do most of what I want it to do, my system crashed three times trying to get it as far as I have. It can't apply a bamboo veneer texture to my wall or supports. Here's the best 20/20 could do after about four hours.Ģ0/20 can't draw a curve on something that's standing up, like my bar supports here. You'd think that with all that exclusivity, I'd be able to render something resembling the back of this peninsula to show to my clients. 20/20 bills itself as "the world's leading interior design software." You need to have a license to buy it and operate it is how exclusive a proposition this software is. ![]() I work with some very expensive professional software called 20/20. So for my interesting kitchen assignment, I want to take the idea of this exposed knee wall in a peninsula and apply it to an island. But in this case, the designer drew attention to it, so much so that it's arguably the focal point of this peninsula. As a structural element, we usually hide them. Now a knee wall is usually a structural thing that adds support to an island or a peninsula. I'm love the supports below this glass bar, and I really like the idea of sheathing a knee wall in bamboo veneer as has been done here. My quest for an interesting kitchen started with an inspiration photograph. I've complained about 20/20 before, so I won't add to my list of public grievances. ![]() Now, I want to show something interesting but in order to work in my industry, I'm compelled to use a truly inferior piece of software called 20/20. They want something interesting and contemporary, so I took their architect's renderings and shifted things around a bit as I am wont to do. But hey, if you have $600 to burn, knock yourself out.I spent the better part of the morning designing a huge, open floor plan kitchen for a lovely couple from Dunedin. It’s more fun to play with and isn’t absolutely necessary unless you’re dying to know what the space will look like in reality. You also have to wait a couple of hours for each image to render. The software is incredibly powerful which also makes it pretty expensive. I used a free trial version of Indigo Renderer for the images you see. This is really helpful to see how light will work in a space. Within Sketchup you can easily assign different materials to various objects so that they appear realistic in the rendered image. One of the cool things about 3D models is that you can render them to create the photorealistic images. There are plenty of great tutorials on youtube from beginner to advanced that will guide you through the modeling process. They sent the model to me and I was able to modify it. The couple I’m designing for actually created their own basic Sketchup model based on the measurements of their kitchen. However, modeling in Sketchup is relatively easy especially if you’re just making basic shapes. Since I studied architecture in college, 3D modeling comes a lot more naturally to me than the average user. It will give you a better grasp of what the final result will be so you’re less likely to end up with any nasty surprises. I recommend doing some 3D modeling especially if you plan on doing a major renovation like a kitchen. You also have access to entire library of 3D models that you can easily drop into your model. It’s incredibly intuitive and best of all it’s free! I use Sketchup all the time to mock up furniture designs and room arrangements. I’ve recently been helping some friends design a new kitchen and Google Sketchup has been my goto 3D modeling program. After posting my kitchen renovation, I’ve been getting a lot of requests from people to do more kitchens. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you pay for water bills separately, your provider will often include a sewage fee. If you spend a fortune in the summer months on A/C or keep that heat pumping in the wintertime, do an aggregate based on your most expensive bill and your cheapest one and divide that number by two. Estimate an amount for your utility expenses based on the last 3 months of payments or the past year. Water/Gas/Electricity: Utility bills can also be tough to estimate - they can vary month to month based on the weather in your locale. There will be a box later for your emergency fund contributions. If you decide to use your emergency fund, leave the box blank. Use your “emergency fund” to cover maintenance and repairs.Choose an amount to set aside every month toward a maintenance “fund”.Do the best you can to estimate a monthly cost.If you’re not sure what to enter in the budget calculator, here are 3 ways to approach the problem: You can go months without incurring any repair and then have to replace your entire roof, so try to put together a rough estimate - it’s always better to overestimate and be prepared. If you’re a homeowner or renter who is responsible for maintenance and repairs, you’ll want to try and estimate what you spend per month - which can be difficult. Unless you have a specific agreement with your landlord to fix things around your rental property, you can leave this section blank. Repairs/Maintenance: If you rent, your landlord is most likely the party responsible for any repairs around the house. If your home insurance is wrapped up in your monthly mortgage payment, don’t worry about it adding in this section - you don’t need to account for the payment twice. Home insurance: This box is for home insurance or renter’s insurance. You can also use this box for other home-related expenses like storage rental fees, monthly pet fees, parking fees, or any costs that aren’t otherwise covered in this section of the budget maker. Have a yard full of pink plastic flamingos because you’ll never answer to a HOA? Leave the box blank. HOA Fees: If your neighborhood has a HOA, you need to make sure you account for your fees in the budget calculator. If you own your home and your property taxes are not included in your mortgage payment, divide those taxes by 12 and add it to your mortgage - the goal is to ensure that your property taxes are covered in your monthly budget. Enter the amount of your monthly mortgage payment in the mortgage box, or the amount of your monthly rent in the rent box of the budget calculator. Mortgage or Rent: Whether you own or rent, you’ll need to factor in your housing expenses. Others, like groceries and entertainment expenses, will be estimates. Some of these costs, like rent and car payments, will be specific numbers. If the last 3 months were unusually high or low, add up all your deposits for the past year instead and divide by 12 to get a better average. Enter that amount in the budget calculator. If your income changes from month to month, add up your total monthly deposits for the last 3 months and divide that number by 3 to get a baseline monthly estimate. If you get paid every other week, multiply your take-home amount by 26 for the number of checks you get each year, and then divide by 12 to get your monthly take-home pay.If you get paid twice a month, add the take-home amount of your two checks together and enter that amount. If you get paid a regular check once a month, enter your net income after deductions each paycheck. To determine what to enter under Salary/Wages in the budget calculator, follow these steps: ![]() Remember, this is the amount you can spend every month, so be sure to use your net income - which is the money you’re left with after taxes and deductions for things like health insurance and your 401(k), not your gross income, which is your total pay before any deductions.
